Keith and Neil face up in migi hanmi gamae

Keith attacks with tobikomi zuki. Neil slides back (suriashi) and parries with nagashi udeuke

Keith responds with gyakuzuki. Neil rotates to parry with nagashi udeuke chudan, simultaneously striking with gyakuzuki chudan

Reverse punch is to centre-line or a little either side, and using tateken (vertical fist) or uraken (back fist)

Discussion

Level 1: Defender must be very relaxed. As lunge punch approaches, defender slides back so as to be just outside of range. This is about managing distance (maai). Defender simultaneously slides inside - about 30-45 degrees to the south west. This means that the defender is just out of range of the attacker, but is in range for any response of his own. Parrying arm catches opponent's punch, helping it forward but redirecting off-line.

Attacker must now follow up with a reverse punch but, due to the angle created, must punch diagonally across his body. Defender pivots on the right foot and delivers a close range reverse punch, it being delivered with the elbow tight in to the body, and the body behind it. Weight is centralised between the legs upon impact, and then whipped forward into the attacker's body. This is done with 'waveform' and delivers great energy into the opponent. Feet point in to the opponent's centre-line.

Level 2: Attacker's punching arm is caught along the Heart meridian and strikes along points H4-7 in the first attack, ie  towards the wrist. Attacker's second punch is intercepted by striking along the Lung meridian along points L7-9, ie towards the wrist

Defender's own punch strikes at the attacker's chest either at the Spleen/Gall Bladder crossing point ie 3 cun from the centre-line and down at a downward angle; or into the Conception Vessel at CV 14 or 15, at a downward angle. To achieve these the defender's punch turns forward and down at the moment of impact.

Level 3 (Principles and follow-up options:

You'll need to attend a seminar or a Teesside Dragon training session for this level
